Major was born April 17, 1922 in Rollo Bay to Edwin and Minnie Reid. Following the completion of his education, he remained on the family farm, raising Ayrshire cattle; and expanded to include several other farms, concentrating on growing and shipping potatoes. In 1972, he sold the farms, retaining 25 acres of land which was the original land grant made to his great-grandfather in 1831. He then served as sheriff of Kings County for several years. In 1971 he joined the staff of the P.E.I. Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He is a past President of the company and now serves as a director and claims adjuster.
Major is married to the former Gladys Trowsdale of Crapaud. They have four children Joanne, Stirling, Helen and Carol, and five grandchildren.
In 1949, Brother Reid was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason in Orient Lodge No. 11 in Souris. He served as Master of this Lodge in 1958, and progressed through various offices in Grand Lodge and was elected Deputy Grand Master in 1984. M.W. Bro. Reid is the grand representative of the Grand Lodge of Ohio near the Grand Lodge of P.E.I.
A member of Park Royal United Church in Parkdale. He served from 1966-1972 as a Director of the Board of Broadcast Governors. He is an avid bridge player, and participates in bridge tournaments in Eastern Canada and the United States.
