Matthew Roy Leard was born October 30, 1919 in Alberton, P.E.I., where he received his early education. He graduated from Mt. Allison Academy in 1939, and attended Mt. Allison University in 1940. Roy joined the R.C.A.F. in 1941 as a Radar Technician and was posted to the British Isles in 1942, where he met and married the former Gladys Cousins in 1945. Upon returning to Canada in 1945, Roy joined his father in the family store and brought up a family of two sons.
Roy was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason in Zetland Lodge No. 7 in Alberton in March, 1946. He was Master of this Lodge in 1951, elected Treasurer in 1958, and has served as Secretary since 1974. Progressed through various offices in Grand Lodge and elected Deputy Grand Master in 1983. He is a member of Albert Edward Lodge of Perfection, A.A.S.R. Summerside.
Roy has been active in the Alberton United Church as Recording Stewart and a member of the Choir. He is a member of the West Prince Chamber of Commerce, was Mayor of Alberton for 18 years, is presently Chairman of the West Prince Industrial Commission, a Director of the Alberton Museum, and President of the Alberton Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Brother Leard is the Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Brazil (Goias) and the Grand Lodge of Equador, near the Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island.
