On June 22, 1974 at the 99th Communication of the Grand Lodge in Prince Edward Island, Nestor William Shewchuk was elected Grand Master.
Hs career in Masonry began in Maikiand Lodge No. 99, Kings on, Nova Scotia, where he was raised in 1955 while stationed at RCAF Station Greenwood. During his seven years in the Valley, he became a member of the. Valley Chapter No. 16, R.A.M., the Antiquity Preceptory No. 5, Halifax, Adoniram Council No. 10, Royal and Select Masters of Wolfville, Annival Chapter No. 31, Order of the Eastern Star of Middleton, N.S., Philae Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Halifax and affiliated wit.h Mount Zion Preceptory No. 73 when it was transferred to Kentville, Nova Scotia.
He served on various degree teams and presided as High Priest of Valley Chapter No. 6 of Middleton in 1961-62, being Junior Warden of Markiand No. 99 and Marshal of the Preceptory the same year. in 1961 he was transferred to Summerside, P.E.J. and presiding as founding Master of Airisle Lodge No. 20 of Summerside. He affiliated with Regent Chapter No. 52, Order of the Eastern Star of Kensington, P.E.I, and was W.P. for the first time in 1966-67 and again in 196869 when he shared the East with his wife. He since has affiliated with Alexandra Chapter No. 11, R.A.M., the Prince Edward Preceptory No. 35 and the Garden of the Gulf Council No. 9 of Charlottetown.
One of the highlights of his Masonic career came when he, being Grand Representative for Iceland to the Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island, while on detached duty at Keflavik, Iceland was able to attend Lodge at Reykjavik and witnessed a degree conferred in Icelandic.
Although Nes was born in Newdale, Manitoba on October 7. 1920 and educated in that Province, he joined the RCAF in Port Arthur, Ontario in 1941. He. was married to the former Elva Dotten of Winnipeg and Fort William, Ontario in February, 1943 and from this union one son, Romer James, was born. Romer is now Captain with the Canadian Armed Forces after graduating from Mount Allison University, Sackyule, N.B., in 1968 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He is married to the former Janice Susan Hicking of Halifax and they reside in the Montreal area where he is at present serving. Nes is a member of the United Church of Canada and during his Service career was very active with the Scout Movement and Little League Ball and taught Sunday School at various stations. While stationed in Summerside his flying commitments were such that he had to curtail a good deal of his community work.
He has been an ardent curler for a good many years and has won recognition in this field. He is very sports-minded and since his retirement from his Service career in 1970 has managed the Stanhope Golf and Country Club at Stanhope, P.E.J., for the past three years.
The Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island is in its 100th year and Centennial Celebrations will commence 1 January, 1975 to commemorate this event, therefore, the Grand Lodge Officers and all Masons throughout the Island are planning and looking forward to a very active and eventful year.
