Brother James Merrill Murley was initiated into Masonry in St. Johns Lodge No. 1, Charlottetown, on November 8th, 1910, Passed December 13th, 1910, and Raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason on January 10th, 1911.
After serving in several subordinate offices he was elected Worshipful Master in 1915.
In 1919 was appointed Grand Lecturer; elected Grand Junior Warden 1920; Grand Senior Warden 1921; and Grand Master in 1922.

Exalted in Alexandra Chapter No. 11 G. R. Nova Scotia, March 29th, 1913; Elected M. E. High Priest April 1919; Right Excellent Grand Superintendent District No. 5, Royal Arch Masons Nova Scotia, June 1921.
Received Knights Templar Orders in Prince Edward Preceptory, No. 35, in May, 1913; elected Presiding Preceptor May 1916. Grand Standard Bearer, Sovereign Great Priory of Canada, 1920.
Received Scottish Rite Degrees in Albert Edward Lodge of Perfection, November, 1914,; elected T. P. G. M., February 1922.
