Most Worshipful Brother
David P. MacLean, PGM
Grand Lodge of
Prince Edward Island, A.F. & A.M.;
Grand Master 1980 – 1981

Most Worshipful Bro. MacLean was born 17 July, 1931, the eldest son of Thomas and Minnie MacLean of Margaretville, Nova Scotia. He attended public school in Margaretville, High School in Middleton, and Agricultural College in Truro.

In 1953, he moved to Prince Edward Island and worked as an academic instructor at the Charlottetown Vocational School. In 1956 he joined the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture and worked for six years as an agricultural representative, spending much time with 4-H members. Later, he transferred to the Federal Farm Credit Corporation as a Credit Advisor.

While working at the Charlottetown Vocational School he met and married Betty Rodd. They raised three sons, Robert, Andrew and James, all of whom also advanced through higher education towards a variety of modern careers.

Bro. MacLean is a Charter member of Park Royal United Church, and served as an elder and as a member of its Christian Education Committee. He was an active member of the Charlottetown Y’s Men’s Club for more than two decades. Other community activities included service as a Director and Secretary to the Board of the Charlottetown Farmers Co-op, a Director of a Charlottetown Credit Union, and a Commissioner of the Village of Sherwood. He also found spare time to enjoy the hobbies of amateur radio and beekeeping.

Bro. MacLean was raised in St. John’s Lodge No. 1, Charlottetown, on Nov. 5, 1963, and served as its Master in 1970. After years in Grand Lodge appointive and elective offices, including that of Grand Master, M.W.Bro. MacLean was further elected to serve as Grand Secretary for several years, during which time he saw (and helped bring into production through his personal generosity) the introduction of a full-English edition of the formerly coded “Cozzens” version of the Webb Ritual. Most Worshipful Bro. MacLean currently holds the office of Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Quebec near the Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island.

Beyond the Craft Rite, Bro. MacLean became a member of Alexandra Chapter No. 11 of Royal Arch Masons (where he served as High Priest in 1986 and later for many years as Secretary, and was promoted to a Grand Chapter office), Garden of the Gulf Council No. 9 of Royal & Select Masters (where he served as Thrice Illustrious Master in 2000), Prince Edward Preceptory No. 35 of Knights Templar (where he also served as Secretary), and Royal Island Conclave No. 28 of the Red Cross of Constantine (where he served as Sovereign in 1992).

These multiple activities have won him many honours and wide respect throughout the Craft.
