Prince Edward Island, A.F. & A.M.;
Grand Master 1978 – 1979

Doug, as he is familiarly known to his many friends, was born on the 25th of November, 1922, to Mr. and Mrs. John A. MacDonald, at that time residing in Pleasant Valley, Prince Edward Island. When Doug was only ten years old, the family moved to the beautiful farming community of Ebenezer, where Doug completed his formal education and where he has resided since.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Doug is a very successful farmer, ever popular and very active in community life.

His interest in current affairs, led Doug to some degree of activity in political circles, through which he became known throughout

the province. His interest in young people and physical fitness, induced him to become a promoter of sports in general, especially that of minor hockey, in which he was an enthusiastic player in his younger days.

Douglas and his family are members of St. Johns Anglican Church, Milton, where he served as warden for a number of years and at the present time is a member of the Vestry Board. He has held numerous offices in the Federation of Agriculture, and is presently a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Farmers Coop, Charlottetown. For many years Doug was a trustee of his home school and served for some time as the secretary of the Board of Trustees.

Doug married Reta MacNeill of Milton on October 1, 1955 and they have three children, Norma Jean at U.P.E.I., Margaret at Holland College, and one son, lain, presently attending Bloomfield High School.

Doug was initiated into Prince of Wales Lodge No. 18 in Hunter River in the spring of 1956, and on the 5th of July, was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason.

As one would expect, Brother Doug, advanced quickly and was installed Worshipful Master of his Lodge in 1961.

He is also a member of Alexander Chapter No. 11, Royal Arch Masons of Charlottetown, and he and his wife are members of Crystal Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star, in which Reta is Worthy Matron for the year 1978-79.

Doug was first appointed to Grand Lodge while serving as Secretary of Prince of Wales Lodge when Most Worshipful Grand Master Roy E. Boates appointed him as Grand Tyler in 1970. He moved swiftly up through the offices of Grand Lodge and was installed as Senior Grand Warden in 1977.

On the sudden demise of the Deputy Grand Master Right Worshipful R. Carmen MacNeill, Brother MacDonald hesitatingly let his name stand in nomination for the highest office in Grand Lodge. He was installed as Most Worshipful Grand Master at the one hundred and third Annual Communication.
