Hazen was born at Murray Harbour North, P.E.J., May 5th. He married Annie E. MacSwain of Peters Road, P.E.J. in 1939, from this union a daughter and son were born. Betty is a high school teacher in Charlottetown. P.E.I. Ian is an Electronic Technologist, married and living in Lower Sackville, N.S. Annie, his wife is an elementary school teacher at Southern Kings Consolidated School, Peters Road, P.E.I.

Hazen is a graduate of The Insurance Institute of Canada and is District Manager of Hydnman & Co., Ltd. General Insrance, Montague, P.E.I.

His career in Masonry began when he took his Entered Apprentice degree in November, 1954, his F.C. degree December, 1954, and was raised to the Sublime Degree of M.M. January, 1955 in St. Georges Lodge No. 4, Georgetown, P.E.I., in 1958 he demitted from St. Georges Lodge No. 4 and joined St. Andrews Lodge No. 13 and served as Worshipful Master of St. Andrews Lodge No. 13 in 196667, is a member of Alexandra Chapter No. 111. R.A.M., Charlottetown, P.E.J., is Grand Representative France National Grand Lodge near the M.W., Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of P.E.I. He served in various offices of M.W. Grand Lodge before his election as Grand Master.

Hazen is a member of Session, Sunday School Superintendent and Trustee of Murray Harbour North Presbyterian Church and past president of P.E.J. Presbyterian Young Peoples Society.

He is active in community work, is a director of P.E.1. United Fund and Campaign Chairman for eleven districts for P.E.J. United Fund, is an executive director of the P.E.J. Insurance Agents Association, is a director of the P.E.I. Housing Corporation, is a former member of Board of Trustees, Montague Regional High School and former member of Board of Trustees, Kings County Memorial Hospital.

At the outbreak of World War II Hazen enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery as a gunner and in 1944 received a medical discharge with the rank of B.S.M. (W.O. II) and is a member of Branch No. 8, Royal Canadian Legion, Montague, P.E.J. His hobbies are gardening and trout fishing.
