Bikes for Books – Press Release

Mount Stewart Consolidated School will be the first school on PEI to participate in a joint project called “Bikes for Books”

Prince of Wales Masonic Lodge No. 18, Wheatley River, in conjunction with Mount Stewart Consolidated School, are launching a pilot project called “Bikes for Books”. It is hoped that this program will encourage students to read more, and students will gain a better understanding of what they have read. Books enlighten, inspire happiness and success, challenge our perspectives and provide comfort at difficult times in our lives. It is essential to establish a love for reading at an early age in life.

The objectives of the program are threefold:

  • to increase student reading and comprehension skills

  • to recognize positive student achievements

  • to provide an attainable goal, with life enhancing results

Students are invited to participate in the program, and each time they read a book and fill out a ballot, their name will go into the draw. The more they read, the more chances they have of winning a bike and safety helmet. These bikes will be presented in the Spring, before the school closes for the summer. There will be two bikes and helmets drawn for each class. Teachers will monitor the ballot process.

This pilot project will present 16 bicycles ( 8 girls and 8 boys) to children participating in this reading program at Mount Stewart Consolidated School.
