Grand Master, 2004 – 2005

Errol Monkley was born, raised and educated in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, son of G. Lorne and Edna Monkley. Early in life he joined the Canadian Armed Forces where, during a twenty eight year military career, he served in the Army for nine years with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, stationed in Edmonton, Calgary and Germany. This was followed by a two-year tour with the Navy aboard HMCS Chaudiere in Victoria, BC. Errol’s last seventeen years were with the Finance Branch of the Air Force with postings in Camp Borden, Trenton, Sioux Lookout and Summerside.

M.W.Bro. Monkley’s Masonic career began in Trenton, Ontario in 1975 where he was Initiated, Passed and Raised in Trent Lodge No. 38. In 1978 Errol and his Family were posted to Sioux Lookout, Ontario, where he became a member of the Sioux Lookout Masonic Lodge, and served as Lodge Secretary for two years. At the same time, he became a Companion of Golden Star Royal Arch Chapter in Dryden, Ontario, and in the same year joined Ledger Preceptory No. 70 of Knights Templar, in Fort Frances, Ontario. In the spring of 1979 Errol joined Khartum Temple of the Mystic Shrine in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as well as joining and becoming Treasurer of the Sioux Lookout Shrine Club in North Western Ontario.

In 1981 Errol was fortunate to be posted to his home town of Summerside, where he immediately joined Hiram and Lebanon Lodge No. 3, becoming its Worshipful Master in 1988. During this period Errol also became a member of Prince Edward Chapter No. 12 Royal Arch Masons in Kensington, PEI. As well, M.W.Bro. Monkley became a Charter Member of Red Oak Shrine Club in Kensington.

In 1990 Bro. Monkley moved to Charlottetown where he joined St. John’s Lodge No. 1. In 1996 Errol joined Philae Temple and the Island Shrine Club, and served as President of that Club.

In 1998 Bro. Monkley was elected Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island, and served in that office until election as Deputy Grand Master in 2003. Meanwhile, he also joined Prince Edward Preceptory No. 35 of Knights Templar in Charlottetown, accepting progressive offices there, and had accepted appointments as Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Alberta and of the Grand Lodge of Delaware.

In June 2004 M.W.Bro. Monkley was elected and installed Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island. By the end of his year as Grand Master, he had earned widespread respect for having travelled widely, attending numerous functions, and representing the Fraternity well. Under his leadership, and through effective work with his Deputy Grand Master, Board of General Purposes and Grand Secretary, a number of reviews and initiatives had proved beneficial to the Craft, including increased emphasis on Masonic protocol and its merits.

In 2005. M.W. Bro. Monkley affiliated with Prince Edward Preceptory No. 35 and was elected Presiding Preceptory in 2008 and again in 2009.

In 2006, M.W. Bro. Monkley joined the Order of Secret Monitor in Mt. Uniacke N.S.

In 2007. M.W. Bro. Monkley joined Red Cross of Constantine in Charlottetown. As well, M.W. Bro. Monkley was invited to become a member of Royal Select Masters in Charlottetown.

M.W.Bro. Monkley and his wife Evelyn continue to reside in Charlottetown and are the proud parents of two grown children, Sandra married to Terry Pauley and their two boys, Brad and Jason live in Stratford, PEI, and son Steven resides with his wife Noella, and daughter Lauryn, in Fogo Island, Nfld.
