Jim was born in New London, P.E.I., to William R. and Annie Stewart MacKay. At an early age, he moved with his parents to a larger farm at Brackley, near Charlottetown. Following the completion of his education, he farmed with his father until 1940, at which time he became employed by the Department of National Defense. Following World War II, Jim began an electrical contracting business which he successfully ran for fourteen years. In the late fifties, he moved to Charlottetown and joined the sales staff of The Prince Edward Island Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He presently serves as an agent in Charlottetown and rural Queens and Kings Counties.
Jim is married to the former Gladys Rodd of Harrington. Their daughter, Virginia, is the wife of Leigh Crabbe, a Past Master of Victoria Lodge No. 2 in Charlottetown. There are two grandchildren, Sharon and Paul.
In 1955, Brother MacKay was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason in Victoria Lodge No. 2. He was Master of this Lodge in 1967. He is also a member of Alexandra Chapter No. 11 Royal Arch Masons, Albert Edward Lodge of Perfection, and St. Lawrence Chapter Rose Croix (Presently called Gordon L. Bennett Chapter Rose Croix)
Valley of Summerside, as well as being a member of Philae Temple and the PEI. Shrine Club. Most Worshipful Brother MacKay is a Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Texas near the Grand Lodge of P.E.I., He and his wife are members of Crystal Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star.
A member of Trinity United Church in Charlottetown, Jim has served on the Session for some years. He is active in the Charlottetown Rotary Club and maintains a membership at the Belvedere Golf and Winter Club. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, curling and bridge.
