Malcolm G. Patterson, PGM
Most Worshipful Brother
Malcolm G. Patterson, PGM
Grand Lodge of
Prince Edward Island, A.F. & A.M.;
Grand Master 1994 – 1995
Most Worshipful Bro. Patterson was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, on June 9, 1926, to Gordon and Armoury Patterson. He has one brother, Gordon. He received his education in Saint John. In 1943 he accepted his first position as a junior clerk with the Bank of Nova Scotia. Later in the same year he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, received basic training in Quebec City, and was then transferred to St. Hyacinth, Quebec, where he was trained as a wireless operator. He served as a trainer telegraphist on board HMCS Napmnia and HMCS New Glasgow.
After receiving his discharge in mid 1946 he resumed his profession as a banker, holding several positions with the Bank of Nova Scotia in various towns and cities in the Maritimes. He received his first managerial appointment in Havelock, N.B. in 1956, and retired in 1983 as Branch Manager in Montague, P.E.I.
Malcolm was married in 1948 to Nellie Jean Clements of Montague, P.E.I. They raised three daughters, Linda (Mrs. John Gibson, Sherwood, P.E.I.), Brenda Patterson, Ottawa, Ont., and Melda (Mrs. Robert Jones, West Royalty, P.E.I.).
On July 10, 1950, Brother Patterson was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in St. Andrew’s Lodge No.13, Montague. He was elected Master of this Lodge in 1982 and was made a Life Member in 1990. He is also a member of Albert Edward Lodge of Perfection and Gordon L. Bennett Chapter Rose Croix (formerly St. Lawrence Chapter) in the Scottish Rite Valley of Summerside, and of Nova Scotia Consistory in the Valley of Halifax. An enthusiastic Shriner, he is a member of Philae Temple, Halifax, past-President of the Island Shrine Club, and has been a member of that Club’s Scooter Patrol.
He was appointed to his first Grand Lodge office in 1982, and thinks of each office he held thereafter not simply as an advancement towards the Grand East but as a separate year of distinct duties, challenging and satisfying in themselves but also helping to equip him for that ultimate responsibility.
Most Worshipful Bro. Patterson holds the offices of Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of the State of Maryland and of the Grand Lodge of Costa Rica, near the Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island.
