Roy Emmerson Boates, Grand Master of Masons in Prince Edward Island, son of Alexander Boates and Mary Jane Boates, was born December 11, 1922, at Tyne Valley, Prince Edward Island. He moved to Summerside at an early age where he attended the Summerside High School, in 1948 he graduated from Dalhousie University as a Pharmacist. He was united in marriage in 1954 with Kathleen Warnback of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. From this union they have four children, one son and three daughters. Their eldest daughter Nancy is married to Blair Drummond. Their son Robert and daughter Beverley are attending University and Shirley the youngest daughter is going to the Summerside High School.
Grand Master Boates attends Trinity United Church, Summerside, and is a member of the Session and serves on the executive of the United Board. He is a Past President of the Summerside Ys Men’s Club and a Past Regional Officer as well as Past President of the Board of Directors of the local Y.M.C.A. He served in England and Continental Europe during the last war. A member of the George R. Pearkes, V.C. Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, Summerside, he was instrumental in the formation of the Legion Concert Band, that during its centennial tour of all Canada and for its fine performances won a number of firsts at the 1967 Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto. He is a member of the Board of Trade and twice President of the Prince Edward Island Pharmaceutical Association. He is President and Manager of the Boates Pharmacy Ltd., Summerside, and was honoured in 1959 by being the first Pharmacist in his Province to be awarded the A. H. Robins Bowl of Hygia for outstanding community service in Pharmacy. He was Commanding Officer of the R.C.S.C.C., Summerside, and a Past District Scout Commissioner of Prince Edward Island Boy Scout Association.
Brother Boates received his Masonic degrees in Hiram & Lebanon Lodge No. 3, Summerside in 1949 and was installed Worshipful Master of his Lodge in 1959. He was appointed Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Delaware in 1967, an appointment of which he is very proud. He served in various offices and on committees of the Grand Lodge and was elected to the Grand East June 27, 1970, as Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Prince Edward Island.
He is a member of both the York Rite and Scottish Rite bodies. Exalted in Prince Edward Chapter No. 12 R.A.M., Kensington, Consecrated in Prince Edward Preceptory No. 35, Kts. T., Charlottetown, a member of Albert Edward Lodge of Perfection and St. Lawrence Chapter Rose Croix (Presently called Gordon L. Bennett Chapter Rose Croix), Summerside and Nova Scotia Consistory, Halifax, A. & A.S.R. A Noble of Luxor Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., Saint John.
Most Worshipful Brother Boates has a deep sense of responsibility to his fellowman and to his community. He is interested in many community projects and has many hobbies, perhaps in particular Golf, Curling and Jogging.
