MW Bro Etherington was born in Hamilton, Ontario on 16 May 1946 to Sterling and Evelyn Etherington of Calgary, Alberta. Coming from a military family, he attended a number of different schools throughout Canada. After the retirement of his father, he finished his schooling in Innisfail, Alberta. MW Bro Etherington joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on 12 June 1963 as an Air Force Policeman (AFP) and served in every Province in Canada except British Columbia and Newfoundland. MW Bro Etherington served overseas in Germany, Puerto Rico, Israel, Egypt, Sarajevo, Scotland and Mexico, retiring on the 31 July 1998 after serving more than 32 years in the Military.

MW Bro Etherington was initiated on 12 May 1980 in Dominion Lodge No. 848, Baden Baden, West Germany. He was passed to the Degree of a Fellow Craft on 16 June 1980 and raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason on 19 January 1981. MW Bro Etherington joined Hiram and Lebanon Lodge No. 3, Summerside in 1987 and became Worshipful Master of that Lodge in 2000. He held the office of Additional Grand Steward in 2000. After serving in a number of different offices he was installed as the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of P.E.I. on 11 June 2011.

MW Bro Etherington was married in June 1969 to Wanda Culleton of Summerside, who passed away in October 2000, in Summerside P.E.I. In August 2004, MW Bro Etherington married Sybil Costain, also of Summerside, where they reside today.
